At this point almost everything I put on my face comes from their long line of vegan products—including my makeup brushes. UD’s practices are certified by both PETA and The Leaping Bunny Program (CCIC) as cruelty-free.

My favorite is probably their Urban Defense tinted moisturizer. I put it on after cleansing and toning my skin and it not only prevents sunburn in the summer, but vibrant, even-looking skin all year round.

I have combination skin and large-ish pores. This stuff makes me feel pretty without having a heavy amount of icky chemicals on my face.

whole wheat angel hair, roasted onion, walnuts and garlic in olive oil, crunchy sea salt, fresh basil, local tomatoes :)

I am not so good at writing down measurements, so spices are usually just my best estimate.

Ingredients:

Two cartons of cherry tomatoes (not sure how many oz. you could just use like 5 large and very ripe tomatoes)

5 oz fresh organic baby spinach (or more!)

6 cups veggie broth (for a thicker, more tomatoey soup, maybe just use 4. I used Rapunzel vegan boullion with herbs and sea salt)

three cans organic garbanzo beans, drained of course

one large yellow onion

extra virgin olive oil

1 bulb garlic

2 red bell peppers

cayenne pepper

1 tsp black pepper

1.5 tsp cumin

2 tsp oregano

sea salt

1/4 cup red wine vinegar

Bring broth to boil and simmer on low.(( add chick peas whenever. I like them to get soft, but if you don’t then just wait until later.))

chop onion and peppers into bite size (we want them to get soft but not squishy), saute in olive oil on LOW heat. We dont want them getting brown

Puree tomatoes, spices, garlic, vinegar and about 1/3 cup oil. Salt to taste.

Test your tomato mixture. If it is yummy, pour it into simmering broth. If not, adjust spices and try again.

Once the veggies are almost done, dump them in the pot, turn heat down, cover. let all the ingredients simmer and get to know each other for about 8 minutes.

uncover pot and dump in allll the spinach you want. simmer some more, not too long. we want the spinach to stay yummy and green.

add cayenne and salt to taste

EAT

I really love this soup. Lots of protein and tomatoey goodness:) Hope you enjoy

uh oh… I think I need this

Have you ever tried this stuff? There...

Skinny Skinny Dry Shampoo

Have you ever tried this stuff? There are a lot of brands but this was the one vegan and organic dry shampoo that I could find. I like the concept; you rub it into your roots/bangs on days when your hair is looking kinda dirty when you don’t have time to shower. What could be better? In middle school I used baby powder, later I learned you could use corn starch.

Was this product worth $32 ? Not sure. Does it work? Well, it depends on your hair type.

I gave this product to my fellow vegan and housemate Danielle to try. She has very fine brunette hair. She said it took a really long time to work the powder into her hair and by that time she felt like she could have just taken a shower instead. Danielle said it did make her hair a little thicker but took the shine out.

She also had her sister try it. Her sister had blonde, straight hair that is slightly thincker Danielle’s. She loved it!

I tried it, too. I, as you may have noted, have very thick, dark, semi-coarse/wavy hair. It takes a while for my hair to actually get greasy, but I tried this product and found that it helped my bangs look clean on days when I normally would have just washed my whole head. I found that the best way to apply it was to sprinkle some into my hands ind then rub it into the roots/bangs with my fingers. Some people just sprinkle the stuff right on, but that made it difficult for me to distribute evenly.

At the end of the day, though, maybe you should just try cornstarch. This stuff is pretty expensive.

I usually don’t eat a lot of junk food because, well, I don’t buy it. But when I do get a craving, as a vegan that often means I have to search for a recipe or make one up. Fun time.

I know you can put vegan cream cheese and onion soup mix in a food processor and end up with a delicious dip but that seemed too easy. So then I thought about adding artichokes to that. And maybe garlic. And…

It seemed like such a perfect idea that I decided to google it and see if someone had already done it. And they have! This stuff looks really good. I am going to make it this weekend and also make my own recipe and see which one turns out better. I think this stuff would be really good on a bagel with sprouts, too. Mmmm…

Sure, I can navigate my way around a menu, but when I go out to spend hard-earned money on a meal, I want something good! Not a salad with everything picked off, etc. I’m sure you veggies know what I mean.

But when I got my hair cut a couple weeks ago, my stylist told me about this place in Lansing called Eden’s Juice. They know what a vegan is!! Again, I’m sure everyone in NYC knows—but that is not always the case in Michigan.

I know the picture isn’t great, but trust me that the smoothies are amazing. I like Caribbean Breeze =) And it is finally warming up around here so smoothie season is coming!

As the semester gets crazy and I plan schedule changes, I am guilty of shopping online and distracting myself with things I can’t afford. But I justify this particular “crush” with the fact that my summer internship demands a level of professionalism that currently my wardrobe/accessories do not meet.

This bag by Matt & Nat is made with recycled materials and is cruelty free. It also won’t break the bank. That’s what I’m talkin about!

My dear friend Joelle has begun to list items on her Etsy again!

Joelle has been my friend for many years and her creativity and crafting has never ceased to amaze me. Her aesthetic, especially when it comes to jewelry, is everything I love. It’s a bit like she snuck into my head and turned my dreams in jewelry!

I’ve been dying to feature her work on this blog and though there’s not a whole lot up on her Etsy quite yet, I know more is coming and I really couldn’t wait to share it with you. Her work is extremely affordable, she’s very reliable and willing to work with you to customize her pieces to fit all of your needs.

But, what I really love is that many of her materials are found items. She currently resides in Philadelphia and uses animal bones, teeth, antlers, feathers, etc to create all of her work. She made me a beautiful pair of feather earrings that I get complimented on all of the time and it’s nice to know they weren’t made from some poor bird who got his feathers yanked off of him somewhere!

Click-through to check out her merchandise and feel free to follow her personal blog as well, which often features her artwork, photographs and sometimes tasty recipes!

Sorry I’ve been totally MIA the...

Hello my lovely veggies!

Sorry I’ve been totally MIA the past week and a half! I was on vacation- my first trip out of the city [besides to Michigan to visit my family] in over a year! It was much needed to say the least. But now I’ve returned to you all, sun-tanned, content and ready to share my latest favorite snack.

I know, I know! I’m always posting about foods, but I can’t help it!

One of my favorite things about coming home after a vacation is that I get to go to the grocery store and buy EVERYTHING because I usually have nothing. This trip was no exception. I returned home to…1 Dr. Praeger’s California Veggie Burger and some freezer burned frozen vegetables.

I immediately cleared my schedule to make a much needed trip to Whole Foods [or “Whole Paychecks” as one of my close friends calls it because you literally could spend an entire paycheck buying groceries there]. Let me preface by saying I adore grocery shopping. As I was unpacking my groceries, I found myself thinking, “Gee! Wouldn’t it be lovely to be a professional grocery shopper?” Yes ladies and gentlemen, these are typical “Jewlie” thoughts.

One of my favorite things about Whole Foods is that there’s always some new treat I’ve never heard of that just seems to hop right into my cart. And thus I bring to you…
So Delicious Dairy & Soy Free Cultured Coconut Milk [otherwise known to the rest of the world as yogurt!]. I bought Vanilla because I’m kind of picky when it comes to yogurt and I once bought a giant tub of yogurt, only to find out I hated it and threw the whole thing away.

This is a delicious, low-calorie snack that I am absolutely head over heels for. It’s just the right consistency for me. I usually eat greek yogurt, which is thicker, but this is about a medium thickness and doesn’t get all water-y on top [which totally grosses me out]. As a HUGE fan of raw coconut and coconut water, I find that this has just the right hint of coconut taste and has that sort of creamy after taste that eating raw coconut has.

Usually I eat my yogurt with a frozen fruit medley [I go for blueberries, cherries and raspberries], but this stuff is so darn delicious I’ve been eating it plain in my little Hello Kitty tea cup!

Any favorite foods at Whole Foods that should mysteriously end up in my cart next trip? Let me know!

xxx.
J.

Feed Your Karma

Feed Your Karma:
I love this.
Not quite warm enough in Lansing, Mitten State for me to wear these yet, but I’ve totally been wearing them around the house and so far all my lady housemates love them and they are really comfortable. I like the versatility and the little wedge heel.

I am five feet tall and weigh somewhere around 100 lbs....

HAIR

I am five feet tall and weigh somewhere around 100 lbs. Maybe on a larger person, hair such as mine wouldn’t look so big. But I am not a larger person and my huge hair is the first feature people notice, especially if they are much taller. Im kindof making a joke here, but not really. So the bottom line is, I need my hair to look nice and I need it to be low maintenance because it would take me a really long time to style it, if I cared to…which I don’t.

What cruelty free products do I use? I love Shikai Color Reflect shampoo and conditioner. It smells really great and doesn’t leave nasty, squeaky residue. I will be the first to admit that some vegan hair products are terrible and don’t add body or shine, but I like Shikai a lot. I get the “deep” kind for my dark hair. It pulls out the red dimensions and the darker colors, too.

I also like the Body Shop’s guarana berry volumising mousse. I just use two pumps to work into my roots with my fingers and scrunch the rest into my ends. It, too, smells great.

Another line of shampoo that I adore is David Babaii for WildAid. Babaii and Kate hudson have teamed up for beautiful and socially responsible hair care that actually works!

WildAid makes amplifying and hydrating shampoo and conditioner. I have tried both and love them. They used to sell these products at the Rite Aid, but now I can’t find them. Probably worth ordering online. The hydrating shampoo smells like pina coladas ! My boyfriend likes it a lot.

Another product line I like is called Head Organics. ( Teehee, get it? ) I haven’t loved their hairspray, but I really like the hair serum. I only need a little bit—maybe a two-pea size drop—and it softens frizz on humid days without killing my curls or making my hair look greasy.

I’ll be back with more hair products, no doubt about that. Email me your suggestions/experiences/questions at vanityveggie@gmail.com!

Totally vegetarian and under 300 calories.

I have to admit something: I am not a cook. I can’t really cook at all, unless you count baking! I grew up with a dad that LOVED to cook and always made delicious and vegetarian friendly meals, so I never really had to learn. That means only one thing…this dinner is SUPER easy and SUPER quick to make!

Please excuse the poorly lit and photographed food. I’m no professional.

The necessities:

Dr. Praeger’s California Veggie Burger

Morning Star Veggie Bacon

Valentina Hot Sauce

Trader Joe’s Whole Wheat Sandwich Slims

Toaster [bonus if it’s Hello Kitty, like mine!]

The Steps:

Microwave the veggie burger for one minute on each side.

Toast the sandwich thins.

Put the veggie burger on the sandwich thin and glob on some hot sauce.

Microwave one slice of veggie bacon for one minute.

Break it in half and put it on the burger.

ENJOY!

Could it get any easier than that? Probably not! And it’s truly a delicious and healthy meal!

xxx.
J.
